Commissioner Connie Hines brings a lifelong dedication to the arts, reflected in her decades of advocacy, leadership, and support for New Mexico artists across disciplines. As the owner and principal of one of New Mexico’s premier interior design firms, she built a distinguished 45-year career as a multidisciplinary designer. Her background includes a BFA in painting, which not only influenced her design practice but also fostered deep connections with individual artists and organizations committed to advancing creative expression.
Throughout her career, Commissioner Hines has held numerous leadership positions that strengthened arts and culture in New Mexico. She served New Mexico State University (NMSU) for 26 years through multiple board roles, contributed to the Las Cruces Downtown Partnership, and served on the New Mexico Board of Interior Design for a decade and as President for two of those years. As Southwest Chair of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), she championed design excellence regionally and was later honored with the IIDA Lifetime Achievement Award.
Commissioner Hines has also been a dedicated fundraiser and supporter of the visual and performing arts. She played an instrumental role in funding efforts for the NMSU Art Department’s Retablo Collection, the NMSU Performing Arts Center, and the university’s Art Museum at Devasthali Hall. She continues to serve on the NMSU Dean’s Council for Arts and Sciences, helping to guide and promote student educational opportunities.
Honored by her gubernatorial appointment to the New Mexico Arts Commission, Commissioner Hines continues to advocate for the state’s vibrant artistic community. In retirement, she remains actively engaged in creative pursuits, including jewelry making and reconnecting with her passion for painting.
