Folk Arts
Folk and traditional arts are the expressive arts practiced and passed down within a cultural community. New Mexico is lucky to be home to a deep well of traditional creativity. These traditions are practiced by people who’ve been here for centuries, as well as by our newest residents. People across New Mexico belong to many kinds of cultural communities, from regional, tribal, and ethnic groups to specific occupations, religions, and families.
At the center of each tradition is the people who practice it – and how they express what is important to them. Folk arts help us express who we are, what we value, what we find beautiful, and how we want to be in community with one another. By supporting people to continue these arts, the Folk Arts Program aims to contribute to the rich heritage of all New Mexicans.

Panel Reviews
New Mexico Arts uses an online grants system for all applications and support material, panel review and evaluation, and grant agreement reporting. Panelists review and score applications and artistic samples online; and enter their review comments. The panel review period is scheduled for the month of March. The panel rankings will be posted on the NMA website within ten business days of the panel review period. The panel rankings will be presented to the Planning and Budget Committee of the New Mexico Arts Commission for funding recommendations in May. Final approval of funding recommendations occurs at the meeting of the full New Mexico Arts Commission in June. Successful applicants will receive a contract package in June/July. Applicants not recommended for funding will receive a letter.
