Harwood Museum of Art for the University of New Mexico

Originally from Northern New Mexico, Jayne Schell is the educational assistant at the Harwood Museum of Art and helps plan, design, teach, and evaluate Harwood’s many education programs. Schell’s position is essential to ensure the current success and future growth of arts programs that serve over 3000 children and families annually.

Schell began her studies in Las Cruces, NM, and completed them at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. She has a B.F.A in textile design with additional focuses on dance, photography, and paper making. She was a founding member of a postmodern environmental dance troupe in Kansas. She has a Montessori pre-school certification from MECA in Hinsdale, Illinois, and taught for many years in Lawrence, Kansas.

In 2000, Schell and her family returned to New Mexico and settled in Taos. Since then she has been involved in the educational programs at the Harwood as participant, volunteer, instructor, and as a part-time educational assistant. In addition to her dance background, Schell also has various teaching certifications in Yoga. She developed an Art and Movement program that integrates yoga with related arts activities. She also teaches a weekly adult yoga class.

The Harwood Museum of Art of the University of New Mexico preserves, collects, and exhibits historic and contemporary art and culture of the Taos region. The Museum stimulates learning, creativity and research for the Taos community and all who share an interest in the arts, while reinforcing the University's academic mission. The Harwood Museum of Art presents Taos art to the world and world art to Taos.
